DreamHome: Benefit for a New Space

DreamHome: A Benefit for Dreamwell Theatre’s Permanent Space June 3rd For 13 years, we have produced many, many great productions without a “store front.” Our vision (and our audiences) have continued to grow. On Thursday, June 3rd, please join us at the delightful North Ridge Pavilion to help kick off “DreamHome,” a campaign to fund our move to a dedicated space. This event is an evening of music, food, drinks and monologues written and performed by local artists. Performers will include: Janet Schlapkohl, Rachael Lindhart, Jason Grubbe, Matt Falduto, Brian Tanner, Maggie Conroy, Becca Robinson, Cheryl Walsh and Kate Thompson. …and featuring the open mic piano stylings of Josh Sazon! Blackbird

Dreamwell Theatre continues its “Season of Taboo Bijou” with Blackbird by David Harrower. Iowa Theatre blog says “Blackbrd Soars” in it’s opening weekend. Read an in depth interview with the cast and director. Blackbird will play at 10 S. Gilbert Street March 19, 20, 26, 27 at 7:30 p.m. Fifteen years ago, a series of encounters happened between Una and Ray that should never have happened. Ray was 40. Una was 12. They haven’t seen one another since. When Una tracks Ray down and shows up at his place of work, both of them are faced with the shattering—and unexpected–consequences of trespassed innocence. Blackbird received the 2007 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play. The New York Post says, “This haunting, powerful, incendiary work is the sort of daring theater far too absent from our stages these days.” The Associated Press called it a “fascinating and unnerving ninety-minute cat-and-mouse tale of revenge and sexual intrigue, with genuine theatricality and undeniable shock value.” Blackbird features Erin Mills as Una and Rip Russell as Ray. Angie Toomsen directs. Rich Riggleman is the technical director. Due to language and adult themes, Blackbird is intended for mature audiences. Tickets are $12 regular, $10 senior, and $8 student. Reservations can be made at www.dreamwell.com or...

Poona the F*%kdog!

Presenting Jeff Goode’s Poona the &*%dog (and other plays for children) 7:30 pm February 19, 20, 26, 27 2010, 10 S. Gilbert St. Iowa City (corner of Gilbert and Iowa). Directed by Meg Dobbs and Brian Tanner. Iowa Theatre Blog says “Poona is a Daring Success.” Backstage with Poona! Ok, it’s really not for kids! For mature audiences for explicit language and adult situations. The perfect dark fairy tale to open a “taboo” season, this show skewers society’s views on everything from sex to terrorism to language. (Despite the title, this play is not suitable for children. Got that? You did see the main title right?). Directed by Meg Dobbs and Brian Tanner, produced by special arrangement with Original Works Publishing. These outrageous “Fairy tales for Grown-ups” are not for the easily offended! Poona, our ingenuous heroine, meets up with aliens, talking shrubs, and mealy-mouthed salesmen in her quest to find someone to play with. Nothing is sacred in this raucous assault on the power of language. “Irresistible.” New York Times “A quite brilliant theatrical mess.” Chicago Times “A bawdy comic romp!” LA Weekly “S*&t-yourself hysterical. Two hours of theater magic that will go down in infamy.” The Stranger, Seattle “Delightful… unforgettable… much more fun than it ought to be.” The New Yorker Cast (alphabetical order) John Crosheck – Penis, Jasper Libby Dobbs – Poona Meg Dobbs – Frog...
