Dreamwell Theatre will hold auditions next weekend for “Hand to God” by Robert Askins, directed by Grant Freeman. Auditions will take place at the Iowa City Public Library from 1:00-4:00 on Sunday, August 11 and from 7:00-9:00 on Monday, August 12. Performance dates will be September 20-22 & 27-29.

“Hand to God” by Robert Askins is a dark comedy described as an “irreverent puppet comedy about a possessed Christian-Ministry Puppet.” After the death of his father, meek Jason finds an outlet for his anxiety at the Christian Puppet Ministry, in the devoutly religious, relatively quiet small town of Cypress, Texas. Jason’s complicated relationships with the town pastor, the school bully, the girl next door, and—most especially—his mother are thrown into upheaval when Jason’s puppet, Tyrone, takes on a shocking and dangerous personality all its own. “Hand to God” explores the startlingly fragile nature of faith, morality, and the ties that bind us.

This play is rated R for vulgar language, sex, and devilish puppets. Some cast members will be expected to learn puppetry, be comfortable with stage combat, and engage in heavy onstage physical intimacy.
